As we all know the Salmon Arm City Council is at it again. According to them, they just want to find a better price for us Salmon Armenians when it comes to garbage disposal, and an easier way to bring more recycling into our city. Unfortunately, they are doing it all the wrong way.
Our city council is netorious for making bad decisions. Bad decisions that reflect onto them, and worst of all, the city and all who lives here. They make decisions where decisions don't need to be made, and they let go what needs to be dealt with. This is the case for garbage side pick-up in our beautiful city.
CHEAP Garbage Service has been not only picking up the garbage of Salmon Arm for the past 21 years, but he has been doing it by hand. No machines, no other crew...I see the same determined, hard-working citizen coming around to my house every Monday morning picking up my garbage bags by hand and throwing them into his truck. You would think that someone who decides to have a job like this, and is devoted enough to do it for not one year, or ten, but over two decades would have their job until they decided to retire. Wrong. The city council of Salmon Arm has asked CHEAP Garbage Service to step down come next year, the replacement...who cares, as long as they have the lowest bid. Not even neccesarily lower than that of CHEAP and what they charge right now, just the lowest bid in general, so long as they do curb-side recycling as well. How silly and hypocritical can the council be. They see an opportunity for them to be making money and instead of charishing a home-town company like they pretend to do in any given situation, they kick him out like he was the garbage.
You see, the Council won't let Wal-Mart come into our city for various reasons...one that they use all too often is that they don't want to affect the small-town merchants that operate in this town. They won't let in a big box store because they are affraid that our little stores will be booted to the side. First of all, rubbish...if they can survive through Zellers and survive through the vast majority of us traveling to Vernon to hit up their Wal-Mart, I think they would survive our own! Second of all, you council members are such hypocrits! Back to the main point of this blog...
CHEAP Garbage service is not only one of our small town businesses, but it's one of the longest running businesses in this town. I can't believe that council members who preach so highly about saving our merchants has the audacity to kick one of the companies out that has been so loyal. Worst of all, if it could get any worse, they aren't doing it to bring in another Salmon Arm business...oh no, they are doing it to bring in the cheapest bid. Vernon, Armstrong, Sorrento...doesn't matter, as long as it's cheaper.
It's not worth it if you ask me. Yeah, sure, it would be awesome for people like us, who actually recycle, to just drop it off on the curb, but I'm also not lazy and I have no problems heading down to the site once a week to drop off my own. If you're lazy and you don't want to recycle, you won't. It doesn't matter if it's outside your front door or down the road...if you don't want to do it, you won't do it no matter how easy they make it for you. Let's face it, nothing in this town is more than a five minute drive away...seems to me like they are throwing out a good home-town company for their own financial benefits.
